La Découverte was founded in January 1992 by Catherine Firmenich, Irène Gautier and Etiennette Vellas who wished to offer a different kind of education for children from all cultures and backgrounds.

The school started out with 15 pupils and now takes care of approximately 150 pupils, 17 years later (2009). Initially the school had one class of children between the ages of 3 to 6. It has opened one new class each year since 1992 and now caters to children from ages 3 to 12.

On August 22, 2003, the school was incorporated as a privately owned company, under the official name of "Ecole La Découverte SA"
